𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 The recent MERICS report, “National Perspectives on Europe’s De-risking from China,” offers key insights into how European nations perceive and implement the EU’s de-risking strategy. "The “de-risking” of relations with China has become an organizing principle for the European Union (EU) since it was first put forward by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in March 2023. As is often the case with the EU, however, what is said in Brussels is not always understood in the same way across the continent." 🚗 These discussions link to recent debates about tariffs on Chinese cars, showing how European countries have varied interests and approaches in their economic relationships with China. 💡 Here’s a brief summary: 🇪🇺 4 Different Approaches: ➜ 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🇨🇿 🇩🇰 🇬🇧 – proactive several years before the concept of de-risking was introduced at the EU level. ➜ 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀/𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀: 🇸🇪 🇫🇮 🇧🇪 – align closely with the EU’s strategy despite internal challenges. ➜ 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: 🇦🇹 🇵🇹 🇪🇸 🇩🇪 – support the policy but wary of harming relations with China. ➜ 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 🇭🇺 – opposes de-risking, continuing to attract Chinese investments. 🇪🇺 Diverse National Perspectives: 🇩🇪 Germany: Supports “de-risking, not decoupling,” balancing security with trade interests. The rhetorical shift from decoupling to de-risking reduced the pressure on German companies to disengage from China or to justify why they remain active in the country. 🇫🇷 France: An early advocate, supporting measures like investment screening and blocking Huawei. Faces challenges from China’s retaliatory measures. 🇮🇹 Italy: Backs de-risking while avoiding total disengagement and balances economic ties with strategic risks. 🇬🇧 United Kingdom: An early advocate of de-risking, aligns its policies with the EU strategy and focuses on reducing dependencies in key sectors. 🔍 Local Governments in Germany 🇩🇪 Through our LoGov Horizon project (https://buff.ly/3xHRkbg) we are connected to with several universities worldwide which are specialized on Local Governments, Decentralization and Federalism. Great to learn from so many distinguished experts. In the country report of our partners from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Martin Burgi, Lisa Hagen, Dr. Nicole Lieb give an overview of the local government structure of Germany. 1. **Types of Local Governments**: Germany's local governance includes municipalities (Gemeinden) and counties (Kreise), with larger cities often having the status of both a municipality and a county (kreisfreie Stadt). Germany has 10.786 municipalities, 294 counties and 106 cities with county rights (kreisfreie Städte) to provide comprehensive local governance. 2. **Local Autonomy**: Enshrined in Article 28(2) of the Basic Law, local governments possess a general competence (Allzuständigkeit) to manage all local community affairs, spanning from public libraries to social services. 3. **Legal Framework**: While local autonomy is constitutionally guaranteed, the specific scope and execution are defined by federal and state laws, ensuring a balance between local independence and overarching legal standards.. As one of the Austrian members in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment we at the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft have recently published our action plan, showcasing how we promote qualitative and diverse methods for evaluating research and researchers. Key Points of the LBG Action Plan: Diversity of Contributions: LBG research assessment criteria include contributions beyond journal publications, such as public engagement, teaching, mentoring, open science, and participatory research. Qualitative Focus: Research assessment at LBG prioritizes qualitative evaluations through peer review, but avoids undue reliance on metrics like the JIF and H-index. Ethics and Diversity Hub: The LBG has established the Ethics & Diversity Hub to support ethical practices and diversity in research FAIR research data The LBG supports making research data findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable, inter alia by providing the CREED repository for data underlying publications Future Directions: LBG will continue to refine its assessment practices by integrating additional diversity and inclusion indicators, further promoting open access, and actively engaging with national and international networks, including #CoARA #researchevaluation #researchassessment

📚 New #OpenAccess Publication in Qualitative Market Research Jonathan David Schöps & Philipp Jaufenthaler (2024) Semantic network analysis in consumer and marketing research: application areas in phygital contexts Link: https://lnkd.in/dvnw9XfV Abstract: Purpose - Large-scale text-based data increasingly poses methodological challenges due to its size, scope and nature, requiring sophisticated methods for managing, visualizing, analyzing and interpreting such data. This paper aims to propose semantic network analysis (SemNA) as one possible solution to these challenges, showcasing its potential for consumer and marketing researchers through three application areas in phygital contexts. Design/methodology/approach - This paper outlines three general application areas for SemNA in phygital contexts and presents specific use cases, data collection methodologies, analyses, findings and discussions for each application area. Findings - The paper uncovers three application areas and use cases where SemNA holds promise for providing valuable insights and driving further adoption of the method: (1) Investigating phygital experiences and consumption phenomena; (2) Exploring phygital consumer and market discourse, trends and practices; and (3) Capturing phygital social constructs. Research limitations/implications - The limitations section highlights the specific challenges of the qualitative, interpretivist approach to SemNA, along with general methodological constraints. Practical implications - Practical implications highlight SemNA as a pragmatic tool for managers to analyze and visualize company-/brand-related data, supporting strategic decision-making in physical, digital and phygital spaces. Originality/value - This paper contributes to the expanding body of computational, tool-based methods by providing an overview of application areas for the qualitative, interpretivist approach to SemNA in consumer and marketing research. It emphasizes the diversity of research contexts and data, where the boundaries between physical and digital spaces have become increasingly intertwined with physical and digital elements closely integrated – a phenomenon known as phygital. 📃🥳 We are pleased to share the latest publication in Organization Theory by our chair member Theresa Langenmayr, former chair member Violetta Splitter, and their co-authors Janne Tienari and Mikko Vesa, in which they write about how to theorize diversity and inclusion for Open Strategy research. The authors build on the wider diversity and inclusion literature to elucidate how most open strategy studies follow a business case approach wherein inclusion, and implicitly also diversity, are theorized based on their impact on strategy outcomes. They show how open strategy scholars can move from the business case towards an alternative, equity-based approach. Slides from my presentation at the 5th annual CASNiG conference  'Human-Environment Relations in Central Asia: Flows, Frictions and Frontiers' The Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient , 12-13 November 2024, Berlin, Germany ‘... meeting one another: between them is a barrier’ (55: 19-20): the frontier as distinction, boundary, bond in the interspecies partnerships of Kyrgyz eagle-hunting This presentation explores the concept of frontier as a necessary factor in constructing, sustaining and maintaining interspecies relations. Discussing the development of the bond between eagle-hunters and golden eagles in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, I present findings from fieldwork undertaken in Bokonbeyvo, examining environmental frontier(s) as the place where two ontological realities meet. I posit the environment as a domain constituted by harmonious dichotomies, frictions and tensions in which human and non-human entities are sharply distinguished from one another and in which agencies successfully interweave, generating cooperation because of distinction (see Ingold 2000; Perry 2023). The frontier is here understood both as a boundary and a point of encounter. It is the furthest extreme reached by human and non-human beings, in which their lives are defined by difference that makes mutual knowing possible. The hunt is an example of the dynamics of this close distance: hunter and prey are bound to one another in the act that most definitely determines the difference between them (Reis 2009; Ingold 1986, 2015; Nadasdy 2007). Thus, the frontier becomes a useful register to read and discuss interspecies relations, as the necessary distance to measure human/non-human mutual proximity. The frontier of the knowable and unknowable in interspecies relationality is here further theorized as a space generated by the practice of vocalising and listening and also where these practices unfold. I examine human vocalizations used to train and direct eagles as constitutive of non-physical boundaries by which eagles, blindfolded when not in flight, gain knowledge of the landscape and receive routes to navigate it. Theorizing avian listening as the place of non-human agency - a falconer relies on the eagle’s willingness to listen to achieve shared goals - this paper argues that ontological frontiers and clear role-boundaries are necessary for two to be one and successful interspecies partnerships. #interspeciescommunication #eaglehunting #goldeneagle #centralasia #kyrgyzstan #interspeciespartnerships #frontiers #boundaries

"Maybe you could talk about the German social credit system?" - challenge accepted. What a great opportunity to reflect on counterparts of China's social credit system project in Germany and the question of what made China pick "trust/credit" as one core paradigm of governance. The annual Workshop on Social Credit and the Law is hosted by Xiangtan University (in Mao Zedong's hometown) which founded an entire faculty dedicated to social credit research and is offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs on social credit. Quick thoughts: - Definitions of "trust/social credit" differ and that is seen as a feature, not a bug. Among others, the broad notion helps further a series of different reform projects - SAMR's concept of Credibility-based Regulation 信用監管 on the rise: was at the center of about 1/2 of the contributions - Also on the rise: Studies into the effects and risks of using "trust/social credit assessments 信用評價" in the private (Uber/Didi, credit scoring,...) and public (algorithmic regulation,...) sectors. Debates among EU legislators are looked to. - Near consensus that the old public law/ private law boundary must be overcome, but how? - Social credit dystopia myths abroad barely impact its construction in China - Where are the internationals? So much talk globally on social credit and so little international interest in this get-together of scholars, judges, procuratorators, NDRC and SAMR officials,...? ...and because we are soo important, the program was printed two meter high and put up on the law campus 😅 #conferencingchinastyle
